The Ritual Gone Wrong
It is a common tradition in India to perform a puja (prayer) and lemon-crushing ritual before driving a new car, believed to ward off negativity and bring good fortune. On Monday evening, Ms. Pawar decided to follow the same practice inside the showroom itself.
The lemon was placed carefully in front of the Mahindra Thar’s tyre. The plan was simple – move the car gently forward to crush it. However, instead of moving slowly, she accidentally pressed the accelerator.
The Accident
Within seconds, the powerful SUV lunged forward, smashing through the showroom’s glass panels and plunging straight onto the pavement from the first floor.
At the time of the accident, Ms. Pawar and a showroom employee, identified as Vikas, were inside the car. Eyewitnesses captured the shocking aftermath, where the overturned vehicle lay outside the showroom.
Quick Response and Safety
Thanks to the Thar’s safety features, including airbags, both Ms. Pawar and Vikas escaped without serious injuries. They were immediately taken to Malik Hospital in Nirman Vihar for medical assistance and were discharged after receiving first aid.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania, no formal complaint was lodged, and fortunately, no pedestrians or bystanders were injured in the incident.
Lessons from the Incident
While the incident ended without casualties, it highlights the importance of ensuring that:
-
Vehicles should always be started and moved in safe open spaces, not within confined areas like showrooms.
-
Basic driving precautions must be observed, especially during rituals or celebrations.
-
Car dealerships may also consider creating designated ritual spaces for customers to safely perform such traditions.
Conclusion
What started as a joyous moment for a new car owner became a newsworthy accident in Delhi. However, the fact that no one was seriously hurt makes this an unforgettable but fortunate escape.
The Mahindra Thar, known for its rugged design and off-road capabilities, once again proved its strength—not on rocky terrains this time, but in an unexpected urban accident.
